If, like me, you have rationalised over the last few years & cut down on the crops you now grow, get out your camera & take a few photos of those specialised horticultural machines that sit gathering dust in your sheds. Give them a good wash before you do it.

The run of the mill agricultural machinery such as your old tractors, discs, cultivators & trailers will make good money at the local farm machinery sale or collective machinery sale. But your specialised machinery, carefully researched & chosen to help grow that new ‘wonder crop’ or those that are now superseded by technology, won’t make any money in those local sales. However there are growers out there , often supplying the organic or local food markets, & also growers in other countries who are looking for second hand specialised machinery for horticultural crops & the internet is the place where those growers are now looking.
Some of the machinery you can see on www.usedhorticulturalmachinery.co.uk is now surplus to requirements on my own farm, as I am not now growing white or red cabbage, butternut squash, & baby leaves, such as spinach & lambs lettuce, as well as apples, pears & plums.
In fact the only crops we are growing at Fletcher Salads are whole head leafy salads such as escarole, frisee, endive, radicchio, lollo rossa & red oakleaf etc for the processing, sandwich & foodservice sectors. We are still supplying some of the other crops such as spinach, wild rocket, red chard & herbs but have decided to buy them in from other specialised growers.
While we were clearing out our own sheds we also found some interesting old items from my father’s era & have entered them under the BYGONES section in www.usedhorticulturalmachinery.co.uk , the sort of things you now see interior designers using, garden designers showing & even in TV, film & stage props -- see the old wicker picking baskets ( log basket ), strawberry punnets etc. I am sure you’ve got some in your sheds too.
